Octocon 2009

Octocon 2009: Well that was good!

Hi everyone!

My name is Danielle. I keep this here site updated with news and things. I do this as part of the Octocon committee and we've been asked to tell you what our favourite memories from this year's convention are, which I'm more than happy to do!

The only trouble is picking just one thing... Hmmm...

I think that the best thing about the weekend was getting a chance to speak to Mike Carey in person. We talked about storytelling, life and publishing, and he was an absolute gentleman. If we both weren't running around doing panels and/or organising a convention, I'd have loved to speak with him some more! I was so happy when he agreed to come back next year! :)

But then again, I met so many wonderful people over the weekend, I was glad to hear how many of them were coming back next year! Meeting new people that love a lot of the same things I do, or things I might be interested in, is always the best thing.

I hope to see you there next year! I really mean it when I say how much fun I had this year. I'm still in shock at how far it exceeded my expectations.

Lots of sci-fi-love,

Danielle

The Golden Blasters: The Winners!

Hello again everyone!

For those of you that couldn't make it, the first ever Blaster awards were decided this weekend after screenings that took the audience's breath away!

First up, The Silver Blaster award was decided by our panel of judges, which was made up of film maker Maura McHugh, writer Mike Carey and superfan Dave Lally. After much deliberation, the Hungarian-made time travel story Elobb Utobb (Sooner Or Later) was chosen for this prestigious award.

The film is astounding in both its simplicity and complexity and truly deserves the award! The film was directed and written by Istvan Madarasz.

But there can only be one winner of the audience-chosen Golden Blaster award, and it certainly was a close one!

The visually stunning Irish film, The Silent City, has been chosen by a single vote to be this year's winner! Director Ruairí Robinson makes a very believable future war zone come to life with some of the best special effects we've ever seen!

Our audience prize was also given out to one lucky attendee, which was a voucher from the lovely people at The Secret Book & Record Store on Wexford St. in Dublin City Centre!

Congratulations are due to all of our award-winners, but every film was chosen by Mr. John Vaughan because it was a fantastically entertaining piece of sci-fi, fantasy or horror. They all deserve a huge round of applause or the nearest internet-based equivilent! :)

And so it was! Octocon 2009

Hello everyone!

Well, all we can say is "Wow!" after such a fantastic weekend! We're still recovering here at Octocon Towers, but we have so much to put up here and tell everyone about and so many people to thank!

All of this will be coming in the next few days, so check back here and on our 2010 site for lots of little things, including the 2010 dates, how to register, and news on who'll be there! Stay tuned, true believers!

With everyone's amazing feedback, we're going to throw an even greater con next year, and Octocon.com will be growing into something very nice indeed between now and then.

So keep your eyes on the website and the Twitter for news as it happens!

Lots of love,

Octocon
